In North American Zuni tribal legend, Hoya is a youth of the Hummingbird people who falls in love with a neighboring chieftain’s daughter. In their jealousy of Hoya, the outsider, the youths of her tribe plot his death during a dangerous hunting trip. Hoya catches wind and instead of saving himself, warns the animal tribes of the hunt. In gratitude, during the hunt they assign one of the animal tribes’ youths to accompany Hoya back to his village safely, showing that one can hunt without taking a life. Through this, Hoya eventually wins the love of the chieftan’s daughter and her tribe with his kindness and generosity.
